Early Piano Lessons

We recently received a complimentary trial of the Kinderbach Preschool Piano Lessons program for the purpose of review as part of the TOS Homeschool Crew.

Does your child enjoy music or playing different musical instruments around the house? Or, have you heard about the study of music helping children’s thinking skills or brain development? Or, do you remember taking piano lessons and wish to start your child in lessons to see if this is something he will enjoy?

Photobucket   Kinderbach is a piano instructional program targeting children ages 2 through 7. This program instructs children to play songs and read music online or on a DVD.  We used the online program.

I had my 10 year old son sit with me to try out and review the program, but it was very young for him. But, I will share with you information about what the lessons cover and my impressions of them.

The online program consists of 6 levels adding up to 240 video lessons in all. In most lessons we looked at, the learning included various teaching methods to include different learning styles:

  • introductory songs that will capture your child’s attention or help your child remember the concept being taught
  • colorful and imaginative visuals to help your child connect with the lesson
  • manipulatives and coloring pages to reinforce what is being taught in the video

I enjoyed the idea of finding the “D” key on the keyboard by remembering that the two black keys together form a house for “Dody” the donkey. Other characters with the first names that start with the letters of the other piano keys were also introduced with a little story to help your child remember the name and place of these keys.

These memory devices are fun and I think they would be effective. There are items to print to use with your child to reinforce what is being taught. Among these print outs were:

  • coloring pages
  • booklets for each level that included pages with activities to review music theory
  • manipulative to color and cut to put on the keys of the keyboard or piano

These lessons not only introduced the names of the keys, but also the different kinds of notes, beats in a measure, loud and soft notes, and finger placement and movement on the keys.

I wish they had lessons geared to the elementary school crowd that focused on the same introductory concepts for beginners.

Online lessons are available for $7.99 per month when you purchase a year’s subscription in one payment of $95.88 for the year. Or, $19.99 per month when billed monthly for a year.
