R.E.A.L Science Odyssey

My family recently received a complimentary copy of R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey Chemistry (level one) by Pandia Press for the purpose of a review for the TOS Homeschool Crew.

This chemistry course for grades 2-5 covers the same topics you would typically find in a high school class, but explained in fun and more simple manner so that the younger set can grasp them. You will find the following topics in this class:

  • What is chemistry?
  • Atoms
  • The Periodic Table of Elements
  • Molecules
  • Matter
  • Chemical Reactions

This book is different than other science curriculum I have seen or used in that the text is written for the parent to read and discuss it with their children. The “big” topic is introduced with a cute little poem and then explained in notes on a “for my notebook” page. “Small stuff”, details about the topic are interspersed with explanations of how to set up and conduct an experiment or activity reinforcing the topic.

If you want simple explanations, but includes the pertinent information needed, and lots of hands-on experiments and activities, this science program is definitely worth checking out. Along with each experiment and activity, forms or worksheets on which to record observations and answer questions are provided. At the front of the book is the following:

  • an outline describing the main topics and subtopics
  • lists of recommended supplementary books to read
  • a list of lab supplies and materials needed to complete this program

In the back of the book, you find:

  • answer keys to crossword puzzles within the book
  • vocabulary words and terms with their definitions from the reading in the form of a glossary
  • an index for easy reference
  • a chart of the Periodic Table of the Elements

If you want to try out this science curriculum or the other two available choices (Life, and Earth and Space), you can look at their Try Before You Buy feature. Take a look at the first several lessons of the book here.

An ebook version of this book can be purchased at Pandia Press for $38.99. Hard copies of this text can be purchased from a variety of vendors at varying prices.
